Center for the Book Awards!

My tasks for this past week were to help set up for the Center for the Book Awards in the State Library on Sept 7th and then take pictures for the award ceremony on the 8th.

The set up included creative planning to make sure that everyone signed in and had room to mingle. We also set up the refreshment area and searched the entire building to find enough chairs (40). The room looked ready that evening and we set up a meeting time for the next day.

Setting up for the Social Media Idea Exchange

Curtis and I spent time today to search for and pull books in the SCSL collection that related to current uses of social media in the workplace and in government institutions. These books were used in a small display in Room 309 for the Social Media Idea Exchange.

And now a month later...

So apparently my sinuses wanted me to take a break. I'm back in action now and met up with Curtis to discuss the stuff he's been working on (social media talks, Book Fest planning, new videos for Lion's Roar and more) and what i can do to get back into the swing of interning.
We discussed new projects and a schedule for the coming week. I worked from 2-5 that day and learned how to create an animoto video (30 second promo videos for free) on the computer and on my phone! I like the program and the randomization of each video.

Ruth's Summer Camp session about Screencasting (10-11)
During this Summer Camp session, i got to learn about the joys of screencasting and I'm not in ownership of a list of free screencasting tools (well, websites that host free screencasting). I loved Screencast-o-matic but the artistic side of me disliked the giant highlight bubble around the cursor.

I met with Rob Lindsey to talk about the statistics for the Lion's Roar podcast. We decided that with only 20 views in the past month, that the format of "Lion's Roar" was not effective as a recorded podcast. The amount of time that Curtis and his crew spent on writing the script, finding the volunteer and editing the recording were not beneficial. I suggested creating a video blog (vlog) version of the Lion's Roar and submit it to youtube. Research for current library vlogs...

iPad playtime! AKA: Pimp my iPad!

The past two days i've been working/playing with the SCSL iPad to get the reference/productivity apps ready for patron use! My only limit is that they had to be free apps. Also the way these iPads were set up, i could not test any of the apps yet.

Podcasting, i knew ye well.

Today is a day of new plans. From my talk with Rob Lindsey, web guru for the SCSL, last friday, i found out that there were only 22 subscribers for the "Lion's Roar" podcast. After a year of podcasts and effort to make this a news source for the SC State Library, there was only one response posted. Curtis and I chatted about who the audience really was and what we wanted to do with the podcasts. The consensus was that the podcasts were not a good enough medium for the information and the effort to market/retool the podcasts was not going to be time efficient or helpful. Curtis then mentioned wanting to keep the Lion's Roar momentum but use video based blogging instead. Earlier in this internship he had showed me "Tech Tuesdays" (see in list below). With the combination of a good (free?) screencasting tool and talking into the webcam, we have the goal for the evolution of the Lion's Roar. Curtis sent me in search of good library vlogs and beyond the ones that started in 2007/8 and only had a few videos, i was able to compile a good list of library youtubers as examples for our new project. Social Media on the GO!

This post will cover the presentation that I gave on Friday, July 23rd. The sweaty palmed me gave a presentation for the SCSL Summer Camp sessions (the second one!) on the uses of Twitter, Foursquare and GoWalla. I spend about 15 minutes to give my prezi presentation and found out the subtitle of my presentation: WE FREAKING LOVE PREZI. Once i showed them the general outline of prezi and then went back to explaining each service, i took a few questions and had an iPhone handy to show typical use. Curtis helped with the timing because he wanted to make sure that we gave them enough time to play with the location based media (or prezi). The reaction was mild but it would have helped if people had actually brought their own cell phones to test everything out (oops). After plenty of time to test everything out, we got some feed back (see the picture below) on how they could use these options and what could be changed about the presentation. Overall, great experience.
